KWB selected Dementia UK as the beneficiary of its 2018 fundraiser, a 100-mile bike ride across the country, from Silloth to South Shields.

Dementia UK provides help for sufferers of dementia and their families, to allow them to cope better with the degenerative impact of the illness.

Dementia is an umbrella term for a certain group of progressive neurological disorders, that is, conditions affecting the brain. There are many different types of dementia, of which Alzheimer’s disease is the most common. Some people suffer from a combination of dementia disorders. Regardless of which type of dementia is diagnosed, each person will experience their dementia in their own unique way. The following short but moving, animated film – called “Together Again” – illustrates how a husband struggles to reconnect with his wife who has dementia, helped by an Admiral Nurse.

KWB’s charity of choice for 2018

One way or another, dementia touches the lives of the majority of people in the UK – be it as a sufferer, or a relative or a friend of a sufferer. In KWB Office Manager, Jo Spencer’s case, it was her grandmother: “My grandmother passed away having suffered from dementia, and I’m conscious that it is affecting more people than ever. With disorders such as Alzheimer’s, it’s not just the person enduring the symptoms who suffers as a result of the illness. The impact on loved ones – both family and friends – is also horrendous. The work of Dementia UK helps in many ways, so we all agreed to raise funds for the charity.”

Dementia UK provides an ‘Admiral Nurse Service‘ to help dementia sufferers and their families. Admiral Nurses provide ongoing one-to-one support, expert guidance and practical solutions to families in need of support that can be hard to find elsewhere.

Admiral Nurses are continually trained, developed and supported by Dementia UK. Families that have their support have someone truly expert and caring by their side – helping them to live more positively with dementia in the present, and to face the challenges of tomorrow with more confidence and less fear.

Managing Director of KWB, John Bryce, said: “The costs involved in providing Admiral Nurses to dementia sufferers and their families are significant, but the help they provide is invaluable. Their great work must continue, and that is why we would like to encourage our peers in the Birmingham corporate world to donate to this event. In doing so, they’ll be making a great contribution to what is becoming a scourge of modern life.”
